Beginning Aviators

Our usual Satuday routine was thrown out of whack when our scheduled activities were canceled because of the impending snow.  What would we do?  In comes the College Park Aviation Museum. I have read about the museum a few times and really just needed an excuse to make the trip.
Parking is easy and C was engaged as soon as we walked in with the automated Wilber Wright.  We were so excited with all of the hands on activities.  We explored propellers. 

We checked out the controls.

We played dress up.  C thought he looked pretty good and loved all of the zippers and badges on his bomber jacket.

There were puzzles and airplanes to build

We rode airplanes.

C and Daddy flew an Airmail plane as well as an early Wright Brothers plane using simulators.

There was a fantastic place for us to experiment with different air velocities.

C really enjoyed flying in his own plane as well.

We even got a little crafty stamping Airmail and making airplane rubbings.

It really was a day to remember and I doubt it will be the last time we go.  Maybe one week we can make it to their Peter Pan club for toddlers.

What To Do With Those Worries?

This whole situations has brought up a lot of worries for everyone.  As adults we are all worried, but so are our kids.  So much has changed overnight.  One day they were at school and with their friends and the next they are stuck in their home with only our immediate family.  It is a lot and there are so many rules on what we can and cannot do as well as where we can and cannot go.  I can tell this is having an effect on all of us.  But, even when we ask children they sometimes have trouble sharing their concerns and fears with us. Last week, during one of my daughter's virtual Kindergarten classroom meetings they had a special visit from our school's amazing Counselor.  My daughter had been having a particularly rough morning and had her head on the table.  I watched and listened from the other room and her demeanor changed immediately when the Counselor let the kids know that their friend Puppy(a puppet) was with her and wanted to say hello.  Puppy missed his friends

Sending Hugs Through the Mail

I think the thing my kids miss the most is seeing and hugging people they love!  Unfortunately I can’t change this.  We love sending letters and notes through the mail, so in April we decided to send hugs.  They were well received and even added to one recipients home office wall.  :-) To start we tore off a large section of paper from our craft roll and each kid laid down so I could trace them from the chest up. Then we started painting.  The kids had a lot of fun mixing colors and adding details. The final step is to cut out the life size hug.  We carefully folded them up in an envelope with a little note and sent them on their way.

Homemade Loom Knitting

Loom knitting has become a popular craft in our house.  My son learned how to make and use his own knitting loom at school and the came home and taught us.  The kids love to knit especially while we listen to an audio book or if someone is reading aloud.  Knitting has a relaxing quality to it and since the looms are easy to make, we made some for the whole family. The first thing to do is to make your own loom.  It is amazing how well these work. and many of the supplies are around the house or in the kids craft bin. Supplies Hot Glue Gun Tube from toilet paper, paper towels or wrapping paper Craft sticks (4+ per tube) Pony beads (1 per stick) Tape To build your loom first decide how many sticks you want for knitting.    We have done it with as few as 4 and as many as 6. On each stick glue one pony bead to an end using a large glob of hot glue.    You can skip this step if you do not have any needs or you can use something of a similar size.
